Almost all cabbage needs is frequent watering. Torrential rains allowed a little relaxation, but because of them, weeds began to grow violently in the rows. Until they are covered by cabbage leaves, weeding should be done regularly. In dry weather, cabbage is watered twice a week. If the plants are watered properly, once a week is enough, and if there is straw mulch, watering can be done less often.
Cabbage needs 200 liters of water to grow a head of cabbage weighing 2 kg. But do not forget about fluffing. So that the roots do not experience oxygen starvation, it is necessary to loosen the soil once every one and a half weeks, usually after watering. At the same time, it will allow to get rid of weeds.
Cabbage really respects nitrogen fertilizers: ammonium nitrate, urea, or just bird droppings. With regular feeding (once every 1.5-2 weeks), cabbage will quickly gain weight. But don’t overdo it. With an excess of nitrogen, cabbage grows very strongly, the heads are large, but flexible.
Pests can strongly slow down the growth of cobs. Cabbage has a lot of them. The most numerous are cruciferous fleas. You can scare them off with a mixture of ash and lime-fluff. Pollination will have to be carried out three or four times with an interval of three or four days.
Late varieties are more resistant to cabbage fly, so do not be alarmed if early varieties were affected by it. But for insurance, you can add Muhoida granules to the soil. It also helps with turning, which should be done once or twice, even on late varieties. This will destroy the laid eggs.
White butterflies do not touch cabbage and feed only on nectar, which cannot be said about their caterpillars, which gnaw holes in the leaves and bite into the cabbages, spoiling the harvest. They can be destroyed by Alathar or Confidor. If the cabbage is small, then the caterpillars can be removed by hand or try to wash them with a hose.
Do not rush to poison snails with toxic chemicals. They can be destroyed by dusting the soil with lime or powdered superphosphate. It is necessary to dust twice with an interval of one hour. After the first pollination, snails shed mucus along with the reagent, and after the second pollination they die. Place traps – glasses with beer. Slugs are especially attracted to dark beer.
