Every housewife in the kitchen has a couple of bay leaves, which can be used not only for its intended purpose – as a spice. Bay leaf is useful in indoor floriculture.
In order for indoor plants to please you with juicy greenery and lush flowering, they need good care and regular feeding.
Of course, today you can find a wide variety of fertilizers in stores, but it’s not at all necessary to go there for effective top dressing. All you need to do is walk into your kitchen.
After all, a package of bay leaves is probably in almost every home. And for sure most of you use it only for its intended purpose – when cooking. But in fact, bay leaves can also be used in floriculture.
What is useful bay leaf for indoor plants
Bay leaves contain a huge amount of useful substances:
- B vitamins. They are very necessary for plants for proper development. This group of vitamins strengthens the root system, stimulates growth, strengthens the immune system and thereby helps to save flowers that are so weakened, which, it seems, have no chance.
- Vitamin C. There is plenty of it in the laurel. And this means that the plant will be better able to resist diseases. In addition, the addition of vitamin C is a kind of protection against chlorosis. Vitamin C has been proven to speed up plant growth. It is not for nothing that ascorbic acid is used as a fertilizer.
- Micro and macro elements. There is a lot of manganese, iron, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, calcium in the laurel. Therefore, feeding plants with bay leaves will replenish nutrient reserves.
- Essential oils. These substances have antiseptic and disinfecting properties. Oils, getting into the soil, disinfect both it and the root system, while also repelling pests.
- Phytoncides. Laurel contains a large amount of phytoncides, which, when released into the soil, retard the growth and reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms and at the same time stimulate the growth of good “inhabitants” of the pot.
- Finally, the bay leaf is rich in acetic and formic acids, which have an excellent stimulating effect on plants.
Recipe for feeding houseplants with bay leaves
The recipe for feeding indoor plants with bay leaves is very simple.
All you need is to prepare the infusion:
- It is enough to take 4 bay leaves and pour them with 1 liter of warm, about 70 degrees, water.
- Let the leaf brew for 3-4 hours and the fertilizer is ready.
- It can be used both on the leaf and for root dressing.
- However, everything is good in moderation, so you need to carry out such top dressing no more than 1 time per month.
