How to plant a pineapple – detailed instructions
The algorithm is simple, the main thing is to follow all the rules:
- Choose a pineapple
The fruit must be fresh – this is important, otherwise it will not grow. Choose a pineapple with green and firm leaves, without any yellow or brown spots, the skin should be golden yellow and firm. Also check the base of the leaves to make sure there are no midges there, and it should not be trimmed – sometimes this hides signs of spoilage.
- We separate the top
The top of the pineapple, that is, its “hair”, must be carefully separated: take the leaves at the base and twist. If you are afraid of damage, then first cut off the upper part, leaving a little pulp, and then remove it around the leaves with your hands. Remove the lower leaves – the trunk should be exposed by 2 cm.
The top is what the new pineapple will grow from. It should be left in a dark but ventilated place for about two days, maybe a little more, so that it dries.
- We sprout pineapple
Put the top in the water, it is better to use a suitable glass dish for this – so that the top does not reach the bottom, and the leaves are not in the water. Let the future pineapple stand on the windowsill, periodically it needs to change the water. Be patient – the roots will appear somewhere in 2-3 weeks. When it will be 10-15, 3-5 cm long, the top can be planted.
- Plant a pineapple
A wide and low pot is suitable for pineapple – about 15 cm. Take the soil ready – you can use a mixture for cacti or a mixture of substrates for orchids and azaleas. Pineapple roots are very fragile, so you need to plant it carefully – to a depth of about 3 cm. Then pour warm water and, if necessary, fix it with supports so that the plant does not fall under the weight of the leaves.
If you want to speed up growth, you can cover the pot with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect.
Pineapple should be watered as needed – when the upper part of the soil dries. The temperature should be around 20-25°C, and of course pineapple needs a lot of sun.
How long does pineapple grow at home?
Patience is also needed here: the pineapple will take root in 6 months. First, a beautiful flower will appear from the center, and then a fruit will form from it.
